Biography
Joan Grace holds a BA (Honours) from the University of Victoria, a MPA from the U of Winnipeg/U of Manitoba Joint MPA Program, and a PhD in political science from McMaster University. In the Department of Political Science, Joan teaches Canadian politics, women & politics, and social movements/interest groups. Joan was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Standard Research Grant for her project Coming to Grips with the State. She has presented numerous papers at national and international conferences. Her articles have appeared in academic journals and edited scholarly collections. Joan is a founding member of GenParlNet (Gender-focused Parliamentary Institutions Research Network), an international team of experts analysing the role of gender-focused committees in legislatures. She is also a member of FIIN (Feminism and Intitutionalism International Network). In 2008, Joan was Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Canadian Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her current research focuses on state architectures and institutional practices which structure women's policy advocacy within the Canadian federal system and provincial governments. Joan was recently awarded the Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance at the University of Winnipeg.
