Biography

Dr. Aarnoud Hoekema is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the Tjongerschans hospital in Heerenveen, The Netherlands. He is a founding member and the President of the Dutch Society of Dental Sleep Medicine (NVTS). In addition, Dr. Hoekema is a research fellow at the University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands with a focus on postdoctoral research in the field of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). His research has led to a wider acceptance and use of mandibular repositioning devices for the treatment of OSA. The results of this research has been recognized both nationally and internationally. Most recently, Dr. Hoekema conducted a multi-center study on the long-term cardiovascular outcomes of oral appliance therapy (OAT) versus continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. He has been honored with the Meier-Ewert Award of the German Society of Dental Sleep Medicine for his outstanding efforts and contributions to the field of dental sleep medicine and the Pierre Robin Academic Award of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine for his exceptional initiative and results in the areas of education and research, with original contributions in the field of dental sleep medicine.
