Biography

Dr. Deborah Beal came to UCCI in 2012 after teaching for many years at a private college in the US. Dr. Beal has taught courses in Environmental Science, Environmental Ethics, Conservation and Biogeography, Natural Resource Management, Animal Behavior and Ecology. In addition to her teaching experience she has received numerous grants and worked for the US Dept of Energy, the Illinois Dept of Natural Resources and the Missouri Dept of Conservation. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ecosystems and Ecography and serves on the Research Review Board for the Henson Robinson Zoo in Illinois. Previously she served as an editor for MERLOT (Multi Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching). Dr. Beal has published peer reviewed papers in the fields of environmental science (Journal of Environmental Toxicology), ecology (Southeast Ecology and Evolution) and faculty development (CHALK Teaching and Faculty Development). She also served as a reviewer for several environmental text books and has worked with Shedd Aquarium in Chicago in developing educational materials for K-12 students. While in Illinois she was a member of the Governor’s Initiative on Environmental Literacy, setting criteria for implementing environmental concepts into Illinois’ K-12 science curriculum standards. Dr. Beal has a BS degree in Biology from Georgia State University, a MS degree in Zoology from Western Illinois University and a PhD in Evolution, Ecology and Environmental Science from the University of Missouri.
