Biography
George Arnold served as chair of the American National Standards Institute Board of Directors from January 2003 through December 2005. Dr. Arnold, who was first elected to the ANSI Board of Directors in 1998, held the position of vice-chair from 2001-2003. He has served as chair of the International Committee, and as a member of the National Issues Committee, Finance Committee and Executive Committee.Dr. Arnold recently retired as Standards and Intellectual Property Vice President at Lucent Technologies, a position he held since Lucent’s formation in 1996. In this capacity, he was responsible for directing the company’s external standards activities on a global basis. Dr. Arnold continues to serve Lucent Technologies as a Consultant on standards strategy and intellectual property matters. In addition to his ANSI responsibilities, Dr. Arnold is also a member of the Board of Directors of IEEE’s Industry Standards and Technology Organization and has served on the Telecommunication Standards Advisory Council of Canada. Since joining Bell Labs in 1973, he has held a wide range of technical and managerial assignments in research and development, including product planning and systems engineering for data networks and business communications systems, system development, quality management, and process re-engineering. Dr. Arnold received his BA degree from Columbia University in 1972, and BS, MS and Eng.Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1973, 1974 and 1978, respectively.
