Biography

Robert J. Hermann retired at the end of 2002 from his position as immediate past chair; he had served as a member of the ANSI Board of Directors since 1993, as a vice chair from 1996 to 1998, and as its chair from 1998 to 2000. He previously served as a member and later as chair, of the International Committee (now the International Policy Committee); he was also a member of the Board’s Nominating Committee, Awards Committee and the Blue Ribbon Panel. During his tenure, Dr. Hermann spearheaded the “Re-inventing ANSI” project – an initiative that addressed fundamental issues regarding the Institute’s roles and responsibilities and its relationships in both domestic and international arenas. He was instrumental in facilitating the coordination between private and public sector interests that enabled ANSI to achieve excellent working relationships with several federal governmental agencies. Dr. Hermann was also a persuasive force in progressing the development and signing of the first Memorandum of Understanding between ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as the first-ever National Standards Strategy for the United States, which was approved during his tenure as chair. Dr. Hermann is a senior partner of Global Technology Partners, LLC, which specializes in investments in technology, defense, aerospace and related business worldwide. In 1998, he retired from United Technologies Corporation (UTC) where he held the position of senior vice president, science and technology. Prior to joining UTC, he served twenty years with the National Security Agency with assignments in research and development, operations and NATO. In 1997, he was named Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for research, development and logistics and in parallel was director of the National Reconnaissance. Dr. Hermann received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Iowa State University.
