Oliver R. Smoot

Biography

 Chair of the ANSI Board of Directors from 2001 to 2002, Oliver R. Smoot has served in numerous leadership roles during his impressive career, including president of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO); chair of the ANSI Information Infrastructure Standards Panel (IISP); and chair of ANSI’s Finance Committee, Organizational Member Council and Patent Group. Mr. Smoot’s leadership also includes former membership in the U.S. National Committee to the IEC (USNC) Executive Committee, former chair of the North American Open Systems Testing and Certification Council, and former chair of the Electronics and Instrumentation Industry Advisory Committee on Trade Policy to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mr. Smoot retired from a six-year tenure as vice president for external voluntary standards relations of the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) where he was responsible for external technical standards and regulatory activities. Prior to his appointment as vice president, Mr. Smoot held the post of executive vice president for twenty-three years, during which time he was responsible for ITI’s internal activities related to the International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to Joint Technical Committee 1 to the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission. An active member of the American Bar Association for many years, Mr. Smoot currently serves as chair of its Technical Standardization Law Committee and had previously chaired the Section on Science and Technology Law. He has also served in numerous positions with the Computer Law Association, culminating as president, and currently sits in the Executive Committee of the U.S. Policy Committee of the Association for Computing Machinery. In addition, Mr. Smoot has served on numerous international delegations and U.S. governmental advisory committees. He received his JD from Georgetown University and a BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
