Biography
Wang Jian is the President of BGI. He graduated from Central South University in 1979 and obtained his master’s degree from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. After graduation, he performed postdoctoral research at the University of Texas and the University of Iowa from 1988 to 1990. He worked as a senior research fellow at the University of Washington between 1990 and 1994. From 1997, he participated in Human Genome Project working closely with Huanming Yang and co-founded BGI . Since 1999, he acted as the main initiator of many international research projects including the International 1000 Genomes Project, the Rice Genome Project, the Silkworm Genome Project etc. He has published papers in many international journals and conducted various key national projects. Honors and Awards(Partial) 2001 The Advanced Group of 1% of Human Genome Project for the 15th Anniversary of National 863 Program Award granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, P.R.C. 2001 Beijing first “entrepreneurship prize†for returned from study abroad. 2002 Outstanding Scientific Research Team Award, Hong Kong Qiu shi Science and Technologies Foundation. 2003 Advanced individual of anti-SARS team in the Capital. 2003 Major Innovative Contribution Team of 2001-2002, granted by Chinese Academy of Science. 2004 Received the Illustrious Scientific Achievement Award of Chinese Academy of Science (Outstanding contributor). 2005 2nd prize of Beijing Science and Technology Award for his research on SARS coronovirus genome sequencing and ELISA diagnosis kit. 2005 Received the first “Outstanding enterpreneurship Awardâ€for overseas Chinese professionals. 2005 Received the Advance Group Medal of Chinese Medical Rescue Team in Indian Ocean Tsunami granted by Chinese Committee of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports. 2009 Received the City’s Innovation Award of Technology for the research project of “The Diploid Genome Sequence of an Asian Individual†granted by Shenzhen Government. 2010 Received the City’s Natural Science Award for the research project of “Panda genome sequence mapâ€granted by Shenzhen Government. 2010 Received the City’s Enviornment Protection Award granted by Shenzhen Government. 2011 Received the Citiy’s Technology Innovation Award for the research project of “Genome short sequence mono-nucleotide analysis method and system†granted by Shenzhen Government. 2012 “Outstanding Talent†granted by Yantian District, Shenzhen 2012 Received 2nd prize of Science and Technology Award Natrual Science division for the project “The first Asian Individual genome mapâ€granted by Guangdong Province 2012 Received Chinese Cooperative Innovation Achievement Award for “Genome short sequence mono-nucleotide analysis method and system†2013 Listed as Thomson Reuters’ Highly Cited Researchers.
