Biography
Gao Chen, male, currently works as a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, University of Science and Technology of China, while serving concurrently as an adjunct professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and at the Department of Physics, USTC. Gao received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from USTC in 1984 and 1990 respectively. Then, he joined the faculty of USTC. From December 1992 to June 1993, Gao advanced his studies at the Electromagnetic Optics Laboratory of the University of Marseille affiliated to the French National Centre for Scientific Research. In December 1995, Gao was sent to study at the Lawrence-Berkeley National Laboratory of the United States under the Program for Selecting Outstanding Young Scientists to Study Abroad by the State Education Commission. In February 1999, Gao returned to China under the Program to Engage Overseas Outstanding Talents of the Knowledge Innovation Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Gao has been committed to research on the application of the synchrotron radiation combination technology in new functional materials studies. He has made a series of pioneering achievements in the research on new ferroelectric materials, multiferroic materials, new fluorescent materials, new energy materials, etc. His research projects have been supported by the Knowledge Innovation Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, and the Foundation for Innovative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Prof. Gao has authored over 60 research papers published in internationally known academic journals, with a total of other citations exceeding 900 times. His pioneering work in the field of combined new materials and quantitative near-field microwave microscopy has paved the way for his peers and other researchers at home and abroad who wish to carry out further investigations. Besides, Prof. Gao also boasts a number of American and Chinese invention patents, of which two have been enforced.
Research Interest
Prof. Gao’s current research interests lie in 1) new functional materials (ferroelectric materials, piezoelectric materials, multiferroic materials, electronic ferroelectrics, fluorescent materials, strongly correlated electron systems, energy & environmental materials, etc.); 2) new-concept solar cells; 3) synchrotron radiation applications in materials science; 4) composite materials methodology; and 5) characterization techniques of material properties.
