Research Interest

Xiang-Dong Fu is Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Fu was responsible for co-discovery of SR proteins, a family of RNA binding proteins involved in constitutive and alternative pre-mRNA processing. Research in our laboratory is focused on RNA biology, RNA can convey genetic information as well as catalyze biological reactions. Recently, small noncoding RNA, represented by miRNA and piRNA, as the regulatory element in gene expression, play important regulatory role incell activitiesand development process of individuals. Besides, study of long noncoding RNA like Xist, Hotair, H19 and so on, gradually reveal the genetic information from genome besides coding proteins. Increasing experimental evidences demonstrated the various biological functions of RNA. Our research focus on two areas: (1)The regulation of mitochondrial gene expressing and function by non-coding RNA, the complexity of mitochondrial genome and transcriptome. (2) Identifying the place where the transcription and splicing of RNA occur and the regulatory mechanism; the effect of RNA-binding proteins on RNA transcription and processing.
