He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Xiamen University in 1982 and a master's degree in plant ecology from the Graduate School of the Chinese University of Science and Technology (Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences) in 1987, and his Ph.D. in ecosystem science from the University of Colorado in 1994.
