Biography
QINGHE CHEN, Professor of Plant Pathology. After receiving a B.S. degree in Plant Protection from Nanjing Agricultural University, I moved to Institute of Plant Protection (IPP),Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences(FAAS) as a research fellow. In 2002, I moved back to Nanjing Agricultural University where I received my Ph.D. in Molecular Plant Pathology. My thesis research concerned the population genetic diversity and mapping of avirulence genes in Magnaporthe oryzae. I then moved to the Texas A&M University. There I studied the effectors of Magnaporthe oryzae, as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Daniel Ebbole. In 2010, I moved to Virginia Bioinformatic Institute at Virginia Tech as a visiting scholar. While at Virginia Tech, I was appointed as a Research Faculty member and study the effector of Phytophthora. In 2000 I came to Fujian Academy of Agricultural Science as an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Plant Protection. I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and full Professor in 2012. My lab's research seeks to control of oomycete disease, particularly those within the genus Phytophthora disease. Most of our projects involve Phytophthora infestans, Phytophthora sojae,Phytophthora capsici, which causes the diseases of tomato , potato,soybean, pepper etc. The approaches we use are multidisciplinary and incorporate the tools of molecular and classical genetics, biochemistry, genomics, and bioinformatics. In the long term, our work will lead to a greater understanding of the oomycetes and strategies for their control.
