Biography

Taiyun Wei, Male, Born on March 22, 1975, Professor of Plant Virology, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, “Minjiang scholar” Distinguished Professor, Member of high-level innovative and enterprising talents in Fujian province, Member of the new century of excellent talents at Universities. To understand the mechanisms enabling the transmission of rice viruses by insect vectors, the insect cell lines derived from leafhopper, small brown planthopper, brown planthopper and white-backed planthopper are established. The mechanisms for the infection of rice viruses in their insect vector cells, including viral entry, multiplication and spread are revealed. All these original studies open up a new field of plant virology. Furthermore, the infection routes of rice viruses in the bodies of their insect vectors, especially how viruses overcome the multiple tissue and membrane barriers from the alimentary canal to the salivary glands to be transmitted to healthy plants are investigated. For the first time in the world, the team of Dr. wei finds that the tubular structures induced by a plant virus facilitates viral spread in their insect vectors. During the past five years, as the corresponding or the first author, Dr Wei published 19 SCI papers in high-level international virology journals such as PLoS Pathogens and Journal of Virology. Now, Dr. Wei is responsible for the Key Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China.
