Biography
A journalist, media researcher and journalism teacher, To Yiu Ming specializes in Hong Kong politics, political economy of the media and human rights issues. He switched to teaching journalism in 1986 after working eight years as journalist for several local newspapers and magazines, including the Hong Kong Economic Journal and Hongkong Standard. He joined the Department of Communication at the Hong Kong Baptist College, which was later upgraded to university. He continues his journalism practice in the capacity of freelance editor, editorial writer, columnist and TV program host. His weekly commentaries in Ming Pao won the Human Rights Press Commentary Award, an annual competition jointly organized by Amnesty International, the Foreign Correspondents’ Club and the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association, four times in a row from 1999 to 2002. He currently contributes news analyses and commentaries to Radio Free Asia, Stand News and newspapers. A philosopher by training, To holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Hong Kong. He is also interested in urban studies and legal scholarship. He holds a Master of Social Sciences (Urban Studies) from the University of Hong Kong, and a Juris Doctor, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong respectively. He is now working on research projects about human rights.
