Biography

I lead a number of teams in the Ireland Research Laboratory working in Cognitive Computing, Healthcare and Privacy. Our contributions in Cognitive Compting are centered around Natural Language Processing and Social Decision Making. Most recently we kicked off an exciting project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, and led by University College London to apply these skills to improving Human Behaviour Change research impact. In the Healthcare space we focus on Care Management and especially how we can help people who plan and deliver care services to make better, more effective choices. Our work in this area has won prizes at research conferences such as ISWC and has been included in Global Technology Outlooks. We work closely with our colleagues in Watson Health to deliver the outputs of our research to the market. My personal research interest is in data privacy - primarily from a user perspective. In this area we are working on how to assist humans engage in information sharing while balancing the tradeoff between utility and risk. Some tradeoff is generally inevitable, but at least users should have tools that help them understand and control what is acceptable risk.
