Biography
Fengyu Ren, born in 1956, graduated from Northeastern University (NEU) in 1982 and received the master’s degree in 1984. He became a lecturer at NEU after graduation, got doctoral degree in 1992, and became a full-time professor in 1997. Now he is the Director of Mining Engineering Institute and doctoral student adviser at NEU. He is a member of 7th Session Mining Engineering discipline appraisal group of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the associate chairman of mining branch of the Chinese Society for Metal, the associate chairman of the journal Mining Research and Development and member of Rock Dynamic Committee of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering and safe production expert of China. Due to his great contributions to mining technology, professor Ren received the government subsidy of the State Council. Professor Ren was the first researcher that introduced the concept of three adaptive laws of efficient mining theory: granular flowing law, rockmass caving law and ground pressure activity law and developed more than ten mining methods, such as induced caving method, synergetic mining method of transition from open pit to underground mine and so on. These methods greatly improve mines’ mining efficiency in China. He is a prestigious scholar in mining academic circle. He has undertaken courses like ore-drawing theory, engineering introduction and career planning and advanced mining science and supervised about 30 doctoral students, 50 master students and some foreign students. He has published two monographs and more than 160 papers. He was also authorized with four national patents. Meanwhile, he has finished numerous state and transverse key research projects, including 11th “five year plan†and 12th “five year plan†projects etc. and many achievements of them reached international level achievement and made remarkably social and economic benefits. His research achievements were awarded the second prize of National Technology Progress, the first prize of Industry and Technology of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, the first prize of Science and Technology of China Gold Association, three prizes of Technology Progress of Metallurgical and Mine Enterprise Association of China and two first prizes of provincial- ministerial award.
