Ruan Xueyu

Biography

Professor Ruan, born in Shanghai in 1933, was graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Presently, he is professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, head of Shanghai Mould Technology Research Institute, director of Ford Motor Company-SJTU C3P Research Center, advanced counselor of Swiss FEINTOOL company, director on the Korean journal “International Journal of Automotive Technology” and the German journal “Research in Engineering Design”, standing member of ICEM. Professor Ruan is a world famous expert in plastic processing and modeling technology. He is one of the pioneers who set up the theory and technology of cold extrusion in China. Being the first in the world to establish the theory of cold extrusion, he successfully developed the cold extrusion of ferrous metal. He has published 4 monographs, such as “the Technology of Cold Extrusion”, contributing greatly to the development of the theory and technology of cold extrusion in China. He has successively presided over and accomplished a brainstorm national project and a key scientific and technological project of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Sciences, two projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, a project of Ford-China Research and Development Foundation. He has won state-level and ministry-level awards and Shanghai municipal and international level awards for many times. Professor Ruan initiatially introduced the research results of CAD/CAM, numerical modeling technology and artificial intelligence into the application and development of plastic processing and modeling production. With the support of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Institute of Light Industry, he became in 1983 the founder of Shanghai Research Institute of Tool and Die Technology, which is an integrated body of research, education and production, harvesting more than 400 research achievements. The achievements and technical services have spread to 21 provinces, cities and counties in China, and countries like America, Japan, Germany and Switzerland with a coverage of more than 10 fields such as light industry, electronics, mechanics, aviation, mobile industry and instruments. In 1994, the State Education Committee established the National Die and Mould CAD Engineering Research Center on the basis of Shanghai Research Institute of Tool and Die Technology. Based on the characteristics of hi-tech, the research group led by Professor Ruan effectively adopted the strategy of Research and Development, Technology Transfer and Project Supporting, which mould the load and cutting point, making conspicuous achievements on promoting and applying advanced technology. He is also the first one to propose the new model of co-building research laboratories with the united efforts of different countries, helping solve the problems coming up during the hi-tech research, development and application processes. This model has been supported with sufficient capitals and is also one for hi-tech management adopted by famous enterprises in China and abroad, sources of new strategies and technical information. He successively set up more than 30 united research and application centers, such as Ford-SJTU C3P United Research Center, FEINTOOL United Research Center in Switzerland and United Software Development Center in U.S.A and so on.
