Adrian Thieret

Biography

Adrian Thieret is a Global Perspectives on Society Teaching Fellow at NYU Shanghai. He holds a Ph.D. in Chinese from Stanford University and a B.A. in Asian Languages and Literatures from the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities. Dr. Thieret researches contemporary East Asian literature and popular culture. His current project clarifies the history and canonization of science fiction in China and across China, Korea, and Japan. He is particularly interested in utopianism, ecology, and transnational cultural flows as related to conceptions of the national and the cosmopolitan. His research has appeared in China Perspectives and his translations of fiction and nonfiction from Chinese and Korean into English have been published in a number of venues. Some of Dr. Thieret’s academic appointments prior to joining NYU Shanghai include as Lecturer in East Asian Studies at McGill University, as Lecturer in Chinese at the University of California: Santa Cruz, and three summers as Resident Director of a NSLIY China summer study abroad program (201517). He was a Blakemore Freeman Fellow to Korea in 2012-13.
