Biography
Emily Murphy is a Lectuer at NYU Shanghai. Prior to joining NYU Shanghai, she was an adjunct assistant at Santa Fe College. She holds a PhD, an MA, and a BA from the University of Florida. Professor Murphy’s research interests are American Studies and Children’s Literature. Her articles include “Life on the Wire: Post-9/11 Mourning in Mordicai Gerstein’s The Man Who Walked between the Towers” and “Unpacking the Archive: Value, Pricing, and the Letter-Writing Campaign of Dr. Lena de Grummond.” Her work has appeared in Children’s Literature Association Quarterly and The Lion and the Unicorn. Professor Murphy’s current book project, Growing Up With America: Myth, Childhood, and National Identity From 1945-2011, traces the evolution of national myths that reemerged during the Cold War and considers how the figure of the child played a central role in the construction and renegotiation of these myths. She also has several works in progress related to her research on childhood and global citizenship and has given invited talks on this subject.
