Biography
Wangyu Liu received her B.S. degree (1988) in Xi’AN Jiaotong University and M.S. degree (1994), Ph.D. degree (1998) both in the major of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation from South China University of Technology. From 2003 to 2004, she was a visiting scholar in the Engineering Department of Cambridge University, and in 2011 she paid a visit in McGill University as a guest professor. She has been the associate professor (2000 ) and full professor(2009~) in South China University of Technology. Wangyu Liu’s research interest is focused on the bio/bionic-design of functional structures, including the multi-body dynamic system of wind turbine machine imitating the off-shore palm trees, bionic vapor chamber imitating the high efficient heat and mass transfer functions of plant leaves. Current research progress of Wangyu Liu ’group in bio/bionic multi-scale design mainly covers two aspects: multi-scale investigation into the cellular tissue reconstruction and physical characterization for different organs of particular plants, mainly including the body, blade sheath and leaf, as well as their applications in active design oriented 3-D printing, Lithium battery separator design and fabrication. Another aspect is exploring the evolution traces of natural structure and functions of plants and the prospect engineering applications, including the bionic design for non-uniform material or composites, bionic flexible joints and bionic vapor chamber.
