Biography

Douglas Horne is a qualified podiatrist who has been registered in the UK since 1985, and is a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.   He is trained in the biomechanical assessment of the lower limb as part of his general podiatry education.  Due to his involvement in a number of sports, mainly rugby union, distance running and golf, he continued his education in the prescription and production of foot orthoses and the patho-mechanics of lower limb sporting injuries.   Through a number of courses over the last ten years, including residential courses with the Langer Biomechanics group, he increased his knowledge in the sports / biomechanics podiatry field treating all types of patients from weekend ramblers to elite athletes.   During his early career he was involved in General Podiatry as well as becoming more involved in the care of diabetic foot complications, which is becoming an increasing part of his everyday practice, specialising in the assessment, treatment and prevention of diabetic foot ulcers and limb salvage. Another interest is in children’s feet (podopaediatrics) including the prescription of children’s orthoses.   Douglas continues to upgrade his knowledge, C.P.E with courses and learning activities both in Hong Kong and overseas.   Between 1999 and 2001, he studied acupuncture at HKU SPACE and attained the Diploma in Clinical Acupuncture.  These techniques have been successfully used in the symptomatic treatment of lower limb sports injuries.  In his current position he routinely assesses and diagnoses foot pathologies, and treats them using conventional podiatry treatments. He also routinely prescribes and manufactures a range of foot orthoses, as well as using physical modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound, laser, strapping and padding.   He is also very experienced in the use of computer / video aided diagnostic tools specifically for the lower limb, as well as frame-by-frame running assessment.
