Biography

Weibin Cai, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Director of the Center for Disease Model Animal (SCDMA), Director of Guangdong Technology Research Center for Disease Model Animal, deputy director of Development & Discipline Construction, Sun Yat-sen University. He received a doctorate in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Sun Yat-Sen University in 2007. He pursued post-doctoral research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in America from July 2010 to September 2012. After return to China,He mainly engaged in the molecular basis of development and regeneration of tissue organs such as heart, blood vessels, the development and standardization of Disease Model Animals .He also paid attention to the applied fundamental research based on clinical requirements. He has published 32 SCI-listed papers related to the above research work, among which he was the corresponding author of 7 and the first author of 5. So far, he has obtained 3 grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 1 grant from National Science and Technology Major Project. He has received more than 2 million scientific research funds.

Research Interest

Cai`s group defined the structural basis for the antiangiogenic activity of recombinant K5, and confirmed the direct inhibitory effect of K5 on tumor cells. They also illustrated the functions and the mechanisms of PEDF in FFAs-induced endothelial dysfunction during obesity and diabetes, and proved that PEDF has dual regulating function on the activity and expression of ATGL. Cai also confirmed the novel origins of regenerative cardiomyocytes and VSMCs in the transient mammalian heart regeneration, and illustrated the function and signal transduction of Tbx20 in the endocardial cushion formation, early atrioventricular canal formation and valve remodeling during mouse cardiogenesis. Recently, his group in SCDMA established some new gene modification technologies such as Talen and crispr-cas 9 for standardization research of disease animal models.
