He graduated from Henan Teacher’s University in 1983, studied in the School of Medicine and Pharmacy in The University de Franche-Comte from 1993 to 1996 (Besancon, France), received PhD degree in 1996. He returned to China and worked in the Pharmacy Department in the School of Life Sciences of Sun Yat-Sen University in 1997, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and full Professor and the Head of Pharmacy Department in 2000. After the founding of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Aug. 2002, he became the Vice-Dean of the Pharmaceutical Sciences (2002-2006). Now, he is the Director of the Institute of Natural Products and Chinese Medicine, Director of Pharmacognosy and Natural Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory, and Director of Guangdong Technology Research Center for Advanced Chinese. Over 200 papers have been published in academic journals at home and abroad (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Acta Bot. Gallica, Phytochemical analysis, Chemistry & Biodiversity, Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering, Journal of Physical Chemistry, Applied Energy, China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Pharmaceutical Journal, etc.). 38 patents have been authorized out of 48 submitted patents as first inventor; and 6 new species of Hypericum from China have been found and named by Depo Yang. He has been engaged in the study of medicinal plants resources and phytochemistry.

Research Interest

His interests mainly involve the following directions: (1) Chemical constituents and quality standard of traditional Chinese medicine (plants, insects, etc.). In particular on pharmaceutical analysis, active component screening, lead compound manufacture, and research on new drug of TCM, such as Hypericum perforatum L., Pogostemon cablin, Morinda Officinalis, Alpinia officinarum;(2) Separation and purification technology of Biomass. Especially in Molecular Distillation technology, our lab has established a platform to complete the process from lab to pilot scale study with a relevant quality testing platform, e.g., for conjugated linoleic acid and its derivatives.
