Yang Xia

Biography

Yang Xia Professor of the department of biochemistry in Zhongshan school of medicine,SunYat-SenUniversity. In 1993, she got a bachelor degree of biochemistry inSichuanUniversity. Then she got a master degree of biochemistry and molecular biology in West China University of Medical Sciences in 1996. She got Ph.D. degree of biochemistry and molecular biology inSunYat-SenUniversityin 2006. She prove for the first time that the anti-tumor activity of K5 inhepatocarcinoma by inducing apoptosis of endothelial cells. Elucidate the molecular mechanism of K5-induced endothelial cell apoptosis via activating mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. Confirm VDAC (K5 receptor) was expressed and specifically combined with K5 ligand in retinal Müller cells, which may mediate the inhibitory effect of K5 on VEGF expression. Define the protein structural features of K5 for its anti-angiogenic activity. Confirm that PEDF suppressed the growth of cervical carcinoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma via inhibiting angiogenesis. Demonstrate that PEDF suppressed the growth of retinoblastoma by both anti-angiogenesis and induction of differentiation. Total 24 SCI-listed papers have been published related to the above research work, in which Yang contribution as the corresponding author papers are 12 and the first author papers are 2.

Research Interest

Professor Yang focuses on the effects and underlying mechanism of endogenous angiogenic inhibitors. Plasminogen kringle 5 (K5), kallikrein-binding protein (KBP) and pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF), the novel and important endogenous angiogenic inhibitors , were chosen to investigate their activities on angiogenesis in several types of diseases such as retinal neovascularization and various solid tumors.
