Biography
My major expertise is in research and business executive training in Intercultural and Workplace communication. I’m interested in the interpretation and explanation of workplace interactive behaviours drawing on pragmatics, sociolinguistics and cross-cultural psychology. I work with authentic interactive data such as workplace meetings and emails, as well as other ethnographic data such as interviews, field observation notes and various types of organizational documents collected in the multicultural workplace. Currently, I'm working on an ethnographic study of management crisis and conflict communication in multicultural workplaces. I am interested in the pragmatic strategies that Chinese and international participants employ in the conflict resolution and problem solving processes. The papers I am working on right now focus on the functions of laughter, especially shared laughter, in conflictual and problem solving meetings.
Research Interest
intercultural communication, workplace discourse, sociolinguistics, and relational language use (politeness) in spoken or digital discourse (English and/or Chinese).
