Biography
After teaching in Chinese primary and secondary schools, I taught in a teacher training university for almost 5 years. In the UK, I was teaching English and applied linguistics courses in schools, in an adult education college and universities while completing higher degrees. At De Montfort University (DMU), UK, I taught and designed linguistics courses for an interdisciplinary degree programme in speech and language therapy and was seconded to the Department of English at the Chinese University of Hong Kong to teach linguistics courses and conduct research as a visiting professor in the early 2000s. Returning to DMU I developed one of the few UK Master’s programmes on Intercultural Business Communication and established an intercultural research centre for learning and communication.
Research Interest
My research interests, with over 100 publications, include investigating cultures of learning, English language teaching, intercultural communication, bilingual language development and assessments, motivational studies of young learners of English and developing innovative qualitative research using metaphor and narrative analyses. I have led externally funded collaborative research teams in the UK, China, Malaysia and Singapore.
