Cancer Metabolism. One of the newly-identified, major biochemical hallmarks of cancer cells is a metabolism switch whereby cancer cells consume more glucose and glutamine than normal tissue, and favor a much less efficient but rapid metabolic mechanism for energy production. Currently, we are interested in how this might happen and how exactly nutrient metabolism is altered by signal transduction changes in cancer cells and what advantages these alterations afford. Understanding these issues will have great value for defining and targeting a therapeutic window for treating cancer.
