Biography

 Dr. Cheng is from Australia. He attended medical school at the University of New South Wales (MBBS) in Sydney, completed his Master of Surgery degree at Hong Kong University and earned his PhD degree at the University of Toronto. After completing General Surgery training, Dr. Cheng sub-specialized in Pediatric Surgery. For the past 20 years, he has gained extensive experience in medical centers around the world, including Great Ormond Street Hospital (London), Sick Kids (Toronto), Royal Hospital for Children (Melbourne, Australia), as well as Queen Mary Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital (Hong Kong). He is an accredited member of the Hong Kong Specialist Board of Paediatric Surgery. His primary clinical interest is laparoscopic surgery for children, and he works part-time at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, a high-volume center for Chinese pediatric laparoscopic surgeries. Prior to joining BJU, he was the Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Monash University and Director of Paediatric Surgery at Monash Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. He is currently still an Adjunct Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Monash University. He has published 116 papers in international journals and has won numerous prizes for more than 100 presentations at international conferences. He led a team of PhD and post-doctoral students to discover the gene P63 as a cause of a congenital malformation called bladder exstrophy, and served as a PhD supervisor. He is an editor of the Chinese Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Frontiers of Pediatric Surgery. Previously, Dr. Cheng volunteered in Angola with Doctors Without Borders for one year. He published a book about his experiences in Africa entitled No One Can Stop the Rain. The book has been translated into Chinese (来自围城的家书) and Turkish
