Biography

Chee-Ruey Hsieh is a health economist. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Vanderbilt University in 1990. Since then, health economics has become the central focus of his research career. He is currently the Li Dak Sum Chair Professor in Health Economics. Prior to his arrival at UNNC, he served as a Research Professor at Duke University with two affiliations: Duke Global Health Institute and Global Health Research Center at Duke Kunshan University in China. Before coming to Duke, he was on the faculty at the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He is the coeditor of three previous books on the economics of health care. He is also the coauthor of the textbook on health economics published by MIT Press.

Research Interest

His current research focus specifically on the supply side of health care sector, which include four markets: (1) physician services; (2) hospitals; (3) pharmaceuticals; and (4) long-term care. In addition,  he will spend time and effort to cultivate the research on two important global trends: (1) the rising of non-communicable diseases (NCDs); and (2) population ageing.
