Biography
Dr. Hao Chen graduated from Beihang University in July 2009 with a BEng degree in Material Processing. During that period, He specialised in welding, material characterisation and stress analysis. This led him to pursue a MSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, which further enhanced his expertise in material processing with wear resistant coatings. After his master study, he worked for Romax Technology Ltd as an Engineering Assistant in gearbox design and consultancy. He undertook a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, working on mechanical and chemical behaviour of thermally sprayed CoNiCrAlY bond coats for gas turbine applications. Dr. Chen has broad range of academic focus including thermal spraying, creep and fatigue, oxidation and corrosion protection, direct metal deposition, welding processes and powder metallurgy of metals and alloys. He has considerable interests in the field of process-structure-property relationships in engineering materials.
Research Interest
Advanced functional thin film developments for marine applications. Mechanical properties and microstructure characterisation of thermally sprayed coatings, such as thermal barriers coatings (TBCs) for gas turbine engine applications. High temperature creep behaviour and failure mechanism investigation of thermal barrier coatings by means of small punch creep test. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements of induced strain during small specimen creep tests. Element diffusion and phase evolution modelling of multi-phase alloys during welding and heat treatment.
