Biography
Hiroyuki Shinohara is an Assistant Professor in Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo China. Hiroyuki is a practitioner, researcher and design critic with 17 years of professional experiences in the field of architecture. His project experiences range from small scale work place design to higher education campus planning. Previous to joining UNNC, Hiroyuki has served internationally renowned corporate architecture design firms as a design leader. At AECOM, Shanghai, he was an associate director and led teams in Architecture Urbanism for integrated architecture and urban design projects. At Perkins & Will, Shanghai, he was a director of design practice and responsible for quality assurance and project delivery for the studio aside from designing architectural projects. His project focus at Perkins & Will was on public architecture, especially higher education facilities including business school, student service center and academic library. Aside from the professional practice, Hiroyuki has been committing to the education of architecture students. As a visiting studio critic he has taught architectural design studios in Chinese and Japanese universities over past ten years. His academic research interest is in architectural design and design theories, and in his current research for the doctorate dissertation Hiroyuki looks into the rhetoric of Japanese architects with the use of words ‘onomatopoeia’ and investigates the correlation between spoken language of Japanese and formulation of spaces in contemporary Japanese architecture.
