Biography
Ir Dr Llewellyn C.M. Tang is currently the Head of the Department of Architecture and Built Environment in the University of Nottingham Ningbo, a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a Professional Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET), a Charter Engineer for the Hong Kong institution of Engineers (MHKIE), a Chartered Builder for the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB), and Associate Faculty Member for Informatics Research Centre (IRC) in the University of Reading. Between 2008 and 2012, he was Associate Faculty Members for Design Innovation Research Centre (DIRC) (funded by EPSRC £1.25m), Innovative Construction Research Centre (ICRC) (funded by EPSRC £6.23m), and Technologies for Sustainable Built Environment (funded by EPSRC £6m). Before that, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Construction Management Group for Innovative Manufacturing and Construction Research Centre between 2005 and 2008 working on a £5.8m EPSRC and ESRC funded multi-university. He was also invited to be Visiting Fellow (University of Hong Kong), Visiting Assistant Professor (City University, Hong Kong). Ir Dr Tang is also the Peer Review College Member of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK and Academy of Finland, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research. He is an author, editorial board member and reviewer for many internationally renowned high impact peer-reviewed journals. He is also an editorial board member for Architectural Research. One of the recent conference paper studied how designers and engineers transfer design information and knowledge effectively was awarded the Best innovation research paper - The 'Rod Howes' Commemorative Award in ARCOM 2009. Since 2009, he is invited to be a task group member on behalf of high education institutions on Building Information Modelling for Constructing Excellence in the UK conveying government policy and industry priority to integrate and amplify digital technologies through the design process. His biography is listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in 2010 and his research has received a number of research and innovation awards and fellowships from prestigious local and overseas institutions. Since 2010 and 2012, he was appointed as the Chairman (YMC Section) and Deputy Chairman respectively for the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (UK Chapter) respectively promoting engineering and surveying development both in the UK and Hong Kong. He also currently serves as an International Project Consultant for analysing the lessons learnt in the construction process from The China Children and Teenagers Fund (CCTF) Community Centre Project. One project site is located in Cifeng in Mainland China and it has been awarded the "PRC 2009 National Human Settlement Best Practice Gold Medal" and the HKIE and HKCOV (HK Council of Volunteering).
Research Interest
Ir Dr Tang’s PhD, completed at the City University of Hong Kong in 2005 investigates an integrated decision support system called to the support of multi-criteria financial and risk analysis at the pre-development stage of project planning in Hong Kong Construction SMEs. Since then he has successfully supervised more than 100 research students (BSc, MSc, MEng, MPhil). The research team that comprise 9 PhD students and 3 researchers that he was previously leading is interested in cutting edge research and consultancy on Building Information Modelling & Management through-life, the use of through-life information and knowledge management, business continuity management and the development of its security and recovery strategies in the construction sector. In particular, the team is still looking at the creation of information and data multi-scale decision-making modelling of behaviour and how the sub-models interact with each other to provide the most productive, cost effective and sustainable systems for design, construction and operation of large infrastructure and construction projects in the digital environment. He is still working closely with global engineering firms, construction firms, software providers, and industry bodies around these topics. To date, he has successfully attracted research funding (as the Principal Investigator) from EPSRC and industry partners in the U.K. in a sum of £0.5m. He also published and presented in these fields with 60+ research outputs that contain high impact internally research journals, international conferences and research and consultancy reports. Before joining the School in October 2008, Dr Tang was involved in a £5.8m EPSRC and ESRC funded multi-university (Cambridge, Bath, Heriot-Watt, Imperial, Loughborough, Reading, Salford, Lancaster, Liverpool, Strathclyde, Leeds) project in the UK on Knowledge and Information Management through Life since 2006. He worked with global engineering firms (ABB, Airbus UK, BAE Systems, MBDA) and construction firms (Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, Buro Happold, Currie & Brown, EC Harris, Ramboll), industry bodies (CIOB, Constructing Excellence, ICE and IStructE). He was one of the principal coordinators with these collaborators in the mega KIM project that made him currently as a close contact with these major industry players. He worked on Task 2.3 Value of information at Loughborough University and the University of Bath, and was part of a team of global aerospace and construction collaborators. The task aimed to develop measures of information value and approaches to the support of decision-making on information retention in a product-to-service paradigm by the use of Bayesian theory.
