Biography

Oliver is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He previously filled academic roles at the University of Manchester (UK), Steinbeis University Berlin (Germany), the Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico) and Seoul National University (South Korea). His research interest lies in business models for sustainability, responsibility and ethics as well as in responsible management, learning and education. Oliver is a long-standing contributor to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative. He edits the responsible management education book collection; has coordinated UN working groups; and founded the Center for Responsible Management Education (CRME). Oliver serves on the editorial board of Academy of Management Learning and Education and has edited related special issues for the Journal of Business Ethics as well as for the Journal of Management Education. In 2016, the paper ‘Income inequality: Value flow analysis, market narratives, and organizational practice’ co-authored by Oliver, won the best paper award of the Academy of Management Social Issues in Management Division. A workshop titled ‘Responsible Management Education in Action’, lead-organized by him won the 2015 best professional development workshop award of the Management Education and Development Division. His textbook ‘Principles of Responsible Management’ was reviewed and commended in Academy of Management Learning and Education in the same year. Oliver has worked extensively as coach and consultant with dozens of companies and universities. Oliver also has designed and taught a variety of full courses on bachelor, master, PhD and executive education levels, including blended and massive open online courses such as the Coursera MOOC ‘Managing Responsibly’.

Research Interest

Oliver’s research combines two related areas. The first area is centred on business model change and innovation for sustainability, responsibility and ethics. The second area is responsible management learning and education, studying students’ and practitioners’ learning to become a ‘responsible’ manager. Oliver is also interested in performative studies of managerial and academic practices and enjoys viewing the world through a constructionist lens.
