Biography
After graduating from The University of Glasgow, Paul came to China to study Mandarin language at Fudan University, Shanghai. He then moved to Ningbo to assist in the start-up of the new Division of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham Ningbo. The main focus of his first 4 years here was the teaching of programming to entry-level undergraduates, and later also developing and teaching content for foundation-level students. After this he returned to the UK for 3 years to focus on his PhD work involving the use of learner analytics in online, computer-based, communal language learning. In 2013 Paul returned to the University of Nottingham Ningbo to resume teaching in the School of Computer Science. Paul’s research interests cover a number of areas, including learner analytics, language learning, teaching of programming, implementation of programming languages, player’s mental modelling of games, and the “demoscene”. He is also actively involved in raising a basic awareness of programming in the entire student body and runs the “Campus of Code” project at UNNC.
