Biography

Professor Lin received his BSME degree from Tsinghua University in Taiwan and the MSME and PhD degrees both from The University of Illinois Chicago. Since he graduated, he has worked in industry, government research institute and universities. Prior to receiving his advanced degrees, Professor Lin worked as a design engineer in industry where his job was primarily involved in design of electric appliances including washers, dryers and refrigerators. After receiving his PhD, Dr Lin first worked as a postdoctoral research associate at University of Illinois on a VA Hospital-sponsored project. He led the research team to build the ground work for the development of a quadruped-leg walking robot as an assistive device for people with walking disability. In 1988, Dr Lin joined the mechanical engineering faculty at The University of Akron. He became the ME graduate program coordinator in 1998 at UA in charge of application evaluations, program curriculum reform and updates, students recruiting, and administration of doctoral qualifying exams. In 2007, Professor Lin was selected for an appointment as Innovative Learning Research Director at the NASA Safety Centre in Cleveland, Ohio through an intergovernmental personnel agreement program. He joined The University of Texas, Tyler in 2008 as Professor and Chair of mechanical engineering and had held an adjunct professor position with The University of Akron till 2010. Along the same line to continue his academic leadership career and research endeavour, Professor Lin recently took a post at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China serving as Dean and ME Professor in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at UNNC. In an international scope, Professor Lin has been invited to serve on the university advisory board as External Examiner of academic programs at Multimedia University in Malaysia since 2008. In addition, Dr. Lin has been serving on several editorial advisory boards of international journals for many years and he was on a number of technical programs and steering committees for ASME, IEEE, SAE and AIAA international conferences and symposiums. Professor Lin’s specialties and research interests span in the areas of CAD/CAM/CAE, robotics, mechatronics, manufacturing, automation, smart materials and structural health monitoring, bioCAD and biofabrication, and applied nanotechnology development. His research has yielded multiple million dollars funding in competitive grants and over a hundred refereed papers and two books so far. One of his major research activities involves the mechatronic development and testing of lightweight, energy efficient, and environmental friendly aircraft de-icing methods and systems sponsored by aerospace industry and government agencies. Lately, Professor Lin has been also involved in such projects as carbon nanotubes-integrated polymeric structures fabrication, and nano-fiber based sensor development for structural health monitoring, biofabrication process planning, and so on. In Professor Lin’s academic career up to the present time, he has directed a number of international visiting professors and scientists, and has been the major or co-advisor for over 70 postgraduate students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees.
