Prakash Balan

Biography

Dr. Prakash Balan possesses a diverse educational background and now practices in the field of interventional cardiology.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in history, summa cum laude.  He also holds a law degree from The University of Texas at Austin School of Law.  He completed his medical education at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio graduating with his MD in 2004.  He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.  He then returned to Texas for his interventional cardiology fellowship at UTHealth.  He has now joined the faculty at UTHealth and practices primarily in the areas of coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease.  In particular, his clinical focus is percutaneous coronary interventions, acute myocardial infarction care, and catheter based therapies for valvular heart disease including transcatheter aortic valve replacement.  His research interests include outcomes in transcatheter aortic valve replacement as well as acute myocardial infarction systems of care.  He also takes an active interest in clinical education.

Research Interest

Dr. Balan is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  He is also board certified in adult comprehensive echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography.  Furthermore, he is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
