Biography

MA and PhD in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies from the University of Vienna (1990 and 1996). 1995-2001 research fellow at the Center of Byzantine Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He taught at the University of Vienna (since 1993), the Freie Universitaet of Berlin (2001/2002) and the EHESS, Paris (2002). Since 2002 he has been teaching Byzantine philology at the University of Cyprus.Research Interests • emotions in Byzantine literature and society • the language of Byzantine literature (both learned and vernacular)• theoretical approach of Byzantine literature (especially aesthetics and reception of hagiographical texts of the middle and late Byzantine period; he is preparing a study on the hagiographical works of Constantine Akropolites and Nikephoros Gregoras)• autobiography• literature in the vernacular•

Research Interest

He is a collaborator of the bibliography of the Byzantinische Zeitschrift
