Biography
" Much social work among the pauperized in Copenhagen during the turn of the last century was carried out by religious voluntary groups influenced in part by Anglo-American versions of Protestantism. My PhD project is a historical-sociological exploration of the ethical-religious project of the largest and most influential of these groups, the ’Innner Mission’ (IM). Beginning with the question of why the environment around IM was particularly active in the ’social questions’, the project seeks more general answers to questions of how value commitments arise, what role experience and interpretation play in such processes, how ethical projects are possible under modern conditions, and how religiously motivated voluntary associations can influence social citizenship and welfare. The project is part of the CISTAS research project on Danish civil society."
