James Beery

Biography

James R. Beery, also known as Jim, has been Senior Counsel of Covington & Burling since March, 2002. Mr. Beery has more than 30 years' experience as a lawyer in international business and corporate transactions. Mr. Beery served as a Senior Vice President and General Counsel of GlaxoSmithKline PLC from 1993 to 2001 and from December, 2000 to June, 2001, where he was a part of the core senior management team and provided legal support to its global business operations. Mr. Beery served as a Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Smithkline Beecham Limited. Mr. Beery held Senior Positions at several leading international law firms where his practice responsibilities included General Corporate, Commercial, Government Affairs, Banking and international business transactions over two decades. He served in Vietnam as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Beery served as Managing Partner of the London office of Morrison & Foerster, specializing in strategic transactions and general corporate matters for a variety of industries. He has been Chairman of DGI Resolution, Inc. since January, 2010. He served as Chairman of Orchid Cellmark Inc. from August 25, 2009 to November 9, 2010. He served as the Chairman of deCODE genetics Inc. from January 2010 to June 10, 2010. He serves as a Non-Executive Director of AP Benson Limited. He has been Senior Independent Non-Executive Director and Non-Executive Director of Inion Oy since August 2006. Mr. Beery served as a Director of Martek Biosciences Corporation since March 2004. He served as a Director of Orchid Cellmark Inc. (formerly, Orchid BioSciences Inc.), from April 23, 2004 to November 9, 2010. He served as a Director of deCODE Genetics Inc. from April 28, 2004 to June 10, 2010. Mr. Beery holds a BA Degree from Harvard College and a JD from Stanford Law School Program in Law, Science and Technology and an AB in Physical Sciences from Harvard College.
