Biography

Pierre-Jean Bordahandy is currently a law lecturer at the University of the South Pacific in Vanuatu where he teaches Legislation and Marine / Maritime Law. Pierre-Jean main area of expertise is generally private international law and more specifically maritime and transport law as well as international trade. Pierre-Jean publishes in English, French and Portuguese on themes ranging from maritime transport law, comparative law, customs, international security and oil exploration and production at sea. For the past six months Pierre-Jean had a postdoctoral appointment in Brazil funded by the Federal Government to research on petroleum exploration and production at sea as well as container demurrage issues. Before that Pierre-Jean has been a law lecturer as the University of South Australia and at the University of Adelaide for the past nine years where he was teaching business law, contract law, comparative law and international export trade and transport law. Pierre-Jean holds a diploma in criminal sciences, a D.E.S.S. (French L.L.M.) in Maritime and Transport Law (University of Aix-en-Provence), a L.L.M. in Private International Law and comparative law (University of Stockholm), a Doctorat d’état de droit privé (University of Aix-en-Provence) and a PhD in Maritime Law (University of Queensland). His last two degrees were awarded under a joint supervision and double degree scheme between the University of Queensland (Maritime and Shipping Law Unit) and the University of Aix-en-Provence (Centre de Droit Maritime et des Transports) for a thesis on “the concept of container and its legal implications”. Pierre-Jean has worked in France for a couple of years as an in house lawyer for a company involved in the international trade of flat glass (cargo claim, insurance policies, charter parties etc.). He has also worked in Australia for Gadens Lawyers and occasionally for Blake Dawson and Waldron advising on French law regarding mining related matters in New Caledonia.
