Biography

Max Quanchi has published on Pacific History, specifically Visual History and the History of Photography.  In 2007, the monograph Photographing Papua focused on the colonial frontier in PNG. He was co-author of A National Strategy for Pacific Studies (2009) and editor of a special issue on Australia and the Pacific for Social Alternatives (2010). His most recent books are The A to Z of Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific with John Robson (2010) and with Susan Cochrane, a revised edition of Hunters and Collectors; Oceanic Collections in Australia, (2010) and with Hannah Perkins and Samantha Rose, Topics from Oceania (2010). He was guest editor for s special issues on the history of photography for Pacific Studies (1997) and Journal of Pacific History (2007) and since 1996 has continued to convene panels on photography at Pacific History Association conferences. His recent articles include a chapter on photography in the Berg Encyclopedia of Fashion and Dress, an essay on PNG independence in Waigani Papers 2008, an essay on the photographer, Merl La Voy in Coast to Coast: Case Histories of Modern Pacific Crossings (2010), an essay on the artist Brett Hilder in Pacific Arts (2010), and an essay on “Old and New Histories” in Agora (2010).  He is currently working on a book on Pacific postcards from the colonial era and a study of the Pacific photographer, Thomas McMahon. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Pacific History and an executive member of the PHA and AAAPS.
