Dr. Petri Vainio

Biography

 Dr. Petri T. Vainio, Ph.D., M.D., has been Managing Director at Essex Woodlands Health Ventures since December 2004. Dr. Vainio spent more than 10 years, starting in 1988, as a General Partner at Sierra Ventures. He was responsible for leading Sierra Ventures’ investment practice in healthcare. Dr. Vainio has been an early stage investor in numerous successful companies in various sectors of healthcare, including medical device companies HeartPort and Intuitive Surgical, biopharmaceutical companies Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Theravance and Connectics. He has been a lead investor in numerous successful healthcare companies in all sectors of healthcare including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and healthcare services. Dr. Vainio serves as Directors at White Pine Medical, Inc., Healthcare Brands International, EUSA Pharma, Inc., and several other private companies. He has been a Non-Executive Director of Molecular Partners AG since 2009. Previously, he served as a Director of CardioRhythm, IPVALUE Management, Inc., Connetics, GenVec, Heartport, Intuitive Surgical and Theravance. He served as a Non-Executive Director of Akubio Limited. He served as a Director of Chroma Therapeutics Ltd. Dr. Vainio served on the Board of Directors of over 20 venture capital-backed healthcare companies which have collectively risen over $1 billion in venture capital financing and reached an aggregate market value of over $5 billion. He served as a Director of Prism Pharmaceuticals. He has over 25 years of experience as an investor in rapidly growing healthcare companies. He holds a MD of Medicine in biochemistry and a PhD of Philosophy in Biochemistry with highest academic honors from the University of Helsinki and a Master’s in Business Administration from Stanford University.
