Biography

I am interested in early modern social history, especially networks and practices of interaction. My thesis (Hyvien miesten valtakunta: Arvid Henrikinpoika Tawast ja aatelin toimintakulttuuri 1500-luvun lopun Suomessa, SKS 2011) focused on the culture of agency of 16th century Finnish nobility. I have also studied members of the Council of the Realm in Sweden and their families. Another field of interest for me is the stratification and social dynamics of peasant society, especially the Western Finnish peasant elites, which I have presented on micro level in several articles. I have also been engaged in monographs on regional and local history covering the early modern era. At the moment I am interested in exploring interaction between nobility and local peasant community, examining individual agency in the wider context of social norms, Crown duties and personal networks. Themes of communication, use of rhetoric, and performativity are strongly present in this, like in most of my previous research.
