Biography

My interests are identity, socialization, changes with cultural and social constructions, power and performance. My dissertation in Ethnology ”Kuorolaulu on maailman paras harrastus” is about Finnish choral singing from a Performance Studies perspective. My aim is to study how identity and community is created, preserved, and also transformed in choral performances locally and nationally. I also examine how immaterial heritage is being used to maintain convenient image of current Finnishness both nationally and globally. In my master thesis in General History I scrutinized how violence entered into Salem community, New England after Merchant traders got power over Pilgrim Fathers at the beginning of seventeenth century. In my master thesis in Ethnology I focused on lumberjacks at Ylä-Savo region in 1920–1950. By studying their identity, socialization, and memories I elicited that their culture was somewhat different as the one with other lumberjacks in Finland.
