Biography

 Prof. Christian Bréchot, MD, PhD, has been the President at Global Virus Network since October 1, 2017. Prof. Bréchot serves as the President of Consortium National de Recherche en Génomique. He has been President of the Institut Pasteur since October 2013, where he develops programs to recruit eminent scientists, implementing an international multidisciplinary education and teaching program, fostering collaborative research and training strategies at major universities and research organizations, coalescing the international network of 33 Pasteur Institutes to encompass a global scientific vision and coordinated training activities and positioning an ambitious and internationally oriented strategy for technology transfer and fundraising. He served as the Managing Director of Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale. He served as Vice President of Medical and Scientific Department at Institut Mérieux SA until October 1, 2013. He served as a Consultant at Mérieux Développement SAS. He served as a Vice President of Medical and Scientific Affairs at Mérieux Alliance since January 1, 2008. Prof. Bréchot served as General Manager and Director General of INSERM (French national institute for health and medical research) from 2001 to 2007. He is a Specialist of liver diseases, he was in charge of the Pasteur Institute's National Reference Center for the molecular epidemiology of viral hepatitis from 1998 to 2001. He served as the Head of the Liver Unit at the Necker-Enfants Malades hospital from 1997 to 2001 and Head of the Cell Biology department at the Necker School of Medicine. He held leadership positions with BIOASTER Technology Research Institute. He has expertise in research, predictive medicine and public health. Prof. Bréchot served university professor, hospital practitioner and head of departments of hepatology and cell biology. His research has focused on viral hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV), particularly regarding their role in liver cancer and to the molecular mechanisms that drive liver regeneration and cancer. He has been a Member of Scientific Advisory Board at ABIVAX Société Anonyme since October 05, 2017. He served as a Director of bioMérieux SA from June 12, 2008 to May 30, 2012. He served as a Director of Transgene SA from 2008 to June 19, 2013. He served as a Director of bioTheranostics, Inc. From 1993 to 2001, he served as Director of the INSERM U370/University Paris V research unit "Hepatocellular Carcinogenesis and Molecular Virology" at the Necker School of Medicine. He is a member of numerous scientific committees and societies and has received a myriad of prestigious awards. He has authored more than 350 articles published in prestigious medical and scientific journals. He studied Medicine at the Broussais-Hôtel Dieu School of Medicine in Paris, he received both clinical training in Hepatology and research training, in the areas of Molecular Biology, Virology and Cellular Biology at the laboratory of Pierre Tiollais at the Pasteur Institute and at the Necker Faculty of Medicine in 1981. Prof. Bréchot obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Paris VII in 1985. He graduated from the Broussais-Hôtel Dieu medical school in Paris, specializing in liver diseases. He received a Doctor of Medicine from Paris Descartes University (Paris VII).
