Biography
Gerard Quash, former director of research at INSERM Unit of Virology (Lyon, France) from 1974 to 1989 and head of the Laboratoire d’Immunochimie, Faculté de Médecine, France, from 1989 to 2002. He has over 30 years’ experience in biochemical and immunochemical research, and in teaching biochemistry and immunochemistry at the Faculties of Medicine and Natural Sciences, University of the West Indies, Jamaica. He is the author of around 100 peer-reviewed publications and solicited reviews, the recipient of an American Cancer Society Fellowship (1969-1970) to the Laboratoire de Biologie Moleculaire, IGR, Villejuif (J.Huppert director) and the main inventor or co-inventor on 8 patents granted to INSERM, CNRS and Advanced BioDesign . On retiring in 2002, his interest in the Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH) was heightened when the importance of a high ALDH activity in a wide spectrum of stem cells began to emerge. He therefore continued to publish research on ALDH obtained by his own team and to try to verify his hypothesis on the role of the ALDHs in the “evasion of apoptosis” as one of the hallmarks of cancer cells.
