Biography
Their main theme of research concerns the study of the working memory capacity across the lifespan (children, young adults and older adults), together with associated processes such as processing speed, inhibition, and executive functions. The focus is placed on developmental and interindividual differences, as well as on intra-individual variability (both within and across situations). A second theme of research is visuo-spatial working memory from a cognitive, differential and developmental perspective. A third theme of research is changes with age in neurofunctional networks underlying cognitive and executive functions. The group of developmental and differential psychology under the direction of Anik de Ribaupierre (now Prof. Emerita) has focused for two decades now on inter- and intraindividual differences in cognitive development and their change with age across the lifespan. One of his founding postulates is that this individual variability constitutes a fundamental phenomenon in development rather than mere noise in the measures. This variability in developmental trajectories has been examined in various cognitive skills, such as working memory, processing speed, inhibition (or more general executive functions). There have been several large-scale, multivariate projects, financed by the Swiss National Research Fund, and / or doctoral theses.
