Biography
r. Michael J. Becich, M.D., Ph.D. serves as Professor of Biomedical Informaticsm, Pathology, Information Sciences and Telecommunications at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center- Shadyside Hospital/Hillman Cancer Center. Dr. Becich serves as Chairman of the department of biomedical informatics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is a Co-Founder of two startups, Tissue Informatics and InterScope Technologies (formerly Trestle Corp), which were merged into Clinical Data and Zeiss. Dr. Becich Co-founded the Association for Pathology Informatics and served as its President. His research interests are focused on the interface between clinical informatics, imaging informatics and bioinformatics. He is an innovator and entrepreneur in the area of whole slide imaging and digital pathology and their use in improving patient care and safety. His research focuses on developing tools to couple clinical data (phenomics) to expression data derived from high throughput genomics and proteomics and imaging repositories. He served as the Chairman of InterScope Technologies Inc. since 2000. He serves as Vice-Chairman of Pathology Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center- Shadyside Hospital/Hillman Cancer Center. He is also associate director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and Co-director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has been a Member of Technology Advisory Board at NinePoint Medical Inc. since February 2012. He also serves as Director of the Center for Pathology Informatics. He serves as a Member of Scientific Advisory Board of Omnyx, LLC. Dr. Becich serves as a Director of the UPCI's Benedum Oncology Informatics Program since 2001. Dr. Becich served as Director of Trestle Holdings Inc. from March 2005 to September 25, 2006. He is a member of 14 professional societies and has contributed to over 140 papers that contribute to the mission of Biomedical Informatics as applied to Translational Medicine and has several on-line presentations addressing both Pathology and Oncology.
