Biography
Steven B. Leichter, M.D. is a nationally recognized,board-certified Endocrinologist with special interest in metabolic disease and osteoporosis. He has published over 80 papers and continues to carry out clinical research, in addition to his active practice of Endocrinology. He earned his undergraduate degree at Columbia University and his medical degree at the University of Virginia. He completed most of his Internal Medicine and all of his Endocrinology training at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Prior to coming to Georgia, he was on faculty at the University of California, Davis, the University of Kentucky, and Eastern Virginia Medical School. He introduced bone density scanning, fractionated lipid profiles, and, more recently, hormonal assessments of hypothalamic dysregulation in obesity and prediabetic syndromes to Western Georgia. He was the keynote speaker at the initial meeting of the Chinese Diabetes Association and chaired the conference, which wrote the United Nations plan for diabetes. He originated the Patient Education Recognition Program of the American Diabetes Association, and he founded the largest public health program in diabetes in the United States, in Kentucky. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. His special clinical interests include hormonal evaluations of orthostatic hypotension and tachycardia, metabolic evaluation of kidney stones, and diagnostic challenges. He is married, and has five children, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and one mixed breed dog.
