Biography
Alfred Forchel (born in 1952) comes from Stuttgart; He studied physics at the University of his hometown from 1972 to 1978, here he also graduated in 1983 and completed his habilitation in 1988. From 1984 to 1990, he headed the University's microstructure laboratory in Stuttgart. In 1990 Forchel accepted the call to the Würzburg Chair for Technical Physics. Here, too, he took over the management of the microstructure laboratory, which went into operation in 1994. Forchel is one of the fathers of the course Nanostructural Engineering, the first engineering course at the University of Würzburg. His work is nanotechnology. The aim is to produce tiny structures for electronic and photonic components. In October 2009, Alfred Forchel took over as President of the University. In 2010, Alfred Forchel and Jan Misiewicz received the Copernicus Prize of the German Research Association. In 2011, Forchel was awarded the honorary doctorate of the University of Breslau. In February 2015, Prof. Forchel was re-elected for a second term of office.
