Biography
Ruairà Brugha is a medical doctor, public health specialist, Professor and Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine and Head of the Division of Population Health Sciences at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). He has 30 years’ experience in international health, including six years in Africa in the 1980s and 1990s as a clinician, public health specialist and researcher at the district level, primarily researching vaccine delivery systems. He spent 10 years at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he was Head of the Health Policy Unit 2003-05 and editor of Health Policy and Planning. His research interest is primarily in health systems and policy research, especially in Africa. During the 2000s, he conducted country level studies and published extensively on the effects of Global Health Initiatives, including GAVI and the Global Fund, on country health systems. Much of his current research – in Africa and Ireland – is on understanding and finding solutions to global health workforce constraints and needs.
